Honest talk with Corook

Hosted by Kendall Washington | Photo by Sara Diggins for the Austin American-Statesman at ACL Fest 2023 | Edited by Roberto Campos | Produced in partnership with the University of Texas at Austin, Moody College of Communication, Bevo Video Productions, and the Hi, How Are You Project.

Backstage at ACL Fest, Corook opened up about the healing power of music, navigating big emotions, and why it’s important to make space for every feeling—especially the messy ones.

This conversation was part of a collaboration between Medicinal Media and the Hi, How Are You Project, an Austin-based nonprofit that uses art and conversation to reduce the stigma around mental health.

“Music was one of the first tools I had for my mental health. It…felt like a way that I was healing myself in real time.”

Corook (they/them) is a Nashville-based singer, songwriter, and producer whose honest lyrics and sense of humor help young people feel seen, heard, and less alone. Their work is a reminder that it’s OK to feel it all—and to say it out loud.
